Promoting Junior Academics and Careers

Gaining Further Qualifications at the GWZO

The GWZO is also a good place to gain further academic qualifications and can be an attractive part of the career path. Young researchers have access to a spectrum of opportunities on site – from the regularly scheduled GWZO Research and Junior Academics Colloquium on the History and Culture of Eastern Europe to the weekly writing workshop organised by the PhD candidates themselves, to an internal supervision system by experienced academics, who provide a second port of call (alongside the »doctoral mothers« or »fathers«) for discussing qualification projects.

The GSGAS Graduate School

The GWZO has a strong partner for structured doctoral training in the Graduate School Global and Area Studies (GSCAS) at the University of Leipzig.

Summer and Winter School

Jointly with the University of Leipzig, the GWZO annually organises doctoral schools on relevant topics. Cooperative events specifically for young researchers – like the JOE-Tagung [JOE Conference], events of the Junge DGO [Young DGO] and summer academies together with colleagues on site – regularly take place in Leipzig and are open to doctoral candidates and post-docs.

EEGA ScienceCampus

The eega Fellowship Programme of the Leibniz Science Campus »Eastern Europe – Global Area« (eega) promotes international young researchers – a good networking opportunity for the GWZO’s doctoral candidates. The coaching offers, talks, workshops and summer school, which brings together media representatives and young researchers, are open to all, especially GWZO employees.

Leibniz PhD Network

As part of the Leibniz Association, doctoral candidates and academics in the post-doc phase at the GWZO have access to attractive funding and further training. The Leibniz PhD Network serves as a platform for connection and deep professional exchange between the doctoral students of the Leibniz Association.
