Knowledge Transfer
Sharing knowledge about Eastern Europe with the world
The GWZO has been developing a wide range of activities to convey its research results to the public for many years: curated film series and exciting academic cinema; informative podcasts on research topics; both large and small exhibitions shown in museums, galleries and cultural institutions across Germany and elsewhere. And, of course, books: specialist and non-fiction books as well as practical manuals and instructive standard works. The Institute also hosts events, conferences and workshops for various audiences and organises educational events: from university seminars to summer and winter schools for young researchers and »science events« for inhabitants of Leipzig. The GWZO is known for this wide variety of knowledge transfer activities not just in its local region of eastern Germany, but far beyond Germany’s borders, especially in our research region.
Transfer and Publishing
The »Transfer and Publishing« Division of the Directorate concentrates, coordinates and implements the GWZO's transfer activities. It aims to convey the in-depth knowledge on Eastern Europe gained over the years to experts and the general public. Research insights from all of the GWZO's departments are disseminated by means of scientific publications, in specialised books and handbooks. In addition, the Institute uses conveys its work to the public in formats developed specifically for relations with the public, the press and the media.

Library and Digital Services
The GWZO is continuously expanding its collections and is already the largest specialist library on Central and Eastern Europe in eastern Germany. The challenges of digitization, open science and research data management are discussed and managed in the »Library and Digital Services« Division of the Directorate. This relates in particular to the materiality and mediality of the knowledge generated, disseminated and stored. The GWZO is working on the standardisation and networking of data as well as the virtual development of arcane sources in order to use digital possibilities both critically and productively.

Forms of Knowledge Transfer
Traveling Seminars »Linking (Art) Worlds«

Giving insights into Eastern Euope a voice
In our media library, you can listen and view afresh what can be learned from the media with the help of experts on Eastern Europe. You can also find out podcast – created in the series Forschungsquartett of the online radio detektor.fm – in the same place.
Passing on knowledge
The GWZO passes on the knowledge gained at its Institute in many ways: with university lectures and seminars, with summer and winter schools for students and PhD candidates, with Girls’ Day, the »Long Night of Scholarship« and podium discussions at the Leipzig Book Fair and DOK Leipzig. The page on teaching gives details about the researchers’ respective university offerings.

Making research results directly accessible
The Institute’s staff members publish their research results in the serials published by the GWZO and in other places pertinent to East Europe studies. Several GWZO serials appear directly in open access – first in the »ideal version« of direct online access and then in print. Texts from the last few years can be accessed in the GWZO’s publication data base.
